Hi all, hope everyone is good and keeping it sideways.................

Crazy things are going on, I am feeling a very strong urge to build another BMW, I have been looking at the price of Compacts, and I am surprised just how damn cheap you can buy a car that is one of the last built, even E46 cars are coming down to realistic prices..............

However, I am still building the Rover, and I am under no illusion that I would never be able to sell her as she sits, so I find myself in a quandry.

Even to build the most basic spec car (bearing in mind, my idea of "Basic", isn't very) would cost the thick end of £10k do ya reckon?

Don't know what to do.................................

RIGHT i honestly thought the same thing when i built my Compact or should i say when i started to build her £10k or maybe £12K should see her built and finished ........ With the modest spares package i have now i reckon im over the £20K mark easy !!!!!!

BUT at that im setting times and mixing with Escorts worth double that !!!!!! I would love to see a BM 6 pot with the sort of cash people are throwing at Escorts in it i reckon it would be an awesome tool on the stages !!!!!!

My new one will be well under 10k but it wont be up to sunbmw standard!!

Drop all the toys and it could easily be done for under 10k, but we have all seen your past BMW's and dont think thats an option

The Lsd is the biggest issue!,,, only ever came in the M3 with a 3.64fd,,, a place in Europe quoted me £750 for a new lower cwp assembly. You still need the whole E46 m3 subframe n shafts as well
,,, then you've got the canbus! ,,,,,,

To be honest, there is so much work to finish the Rover, it would be a fair old thing to take over from.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I have built enough cars now though to know, it never, ever stays on budget. I am currently, at a rough guess £13000 in on the Rover, and we are here..............

but in the grand scheme of things £ 1000 on any axle diff isn't breaking the bank, not when you look what a live axle costs..

fully agree, but would have built it solely as a historic car.

Dave is right, I have built my own axle, it is a 4HA which I have thick tubed, and I am using Atlas floating hubs, flanges, studs etc, and Fostek have had me some bespoke shafts made. The Diff is a Powerlock that I have rebuilt, and the CWP was a Jag Mk2 item, 4.555:1. That little lot alone, without the brakes was £2500 Then there is the 6 Magnesium Bilstiens for the rear (4 on the car and two spare), the two sets of Front Bilstiens (one set brand new, made by myself), the list goes on. The trouble is, I have virtually made everything myself, or had it engineered as nothing is available off the shelf. The price you pay to be "different" eh!

like you say lee, costs spiral with historics, our rickster is just finishing his mk1 bda and the costs are another story!! looking historic and going quick is as good though, get it finished and get it over the water, they'd love it on the i.o.m
