£10K of brand new tyres might buy more seconds than a clicky box? :?:

If cost was no consideration, I'd do exactly what Foxy's done and you're about to do Chris. 8)

But £10K buys a 2012 Fireblade and £30 fuels a whole day of fun. :P
Last weekend will probably cost me in excess of £2K for the 10 miles of frustration, which pi55ed me off no end....
I'd have been swinging from a rope well before spending £50K on 14 DNFs tho! :(

130C oil temps doesn't seem to fluster S50s, either IME, or from others' reports.

Haven't seen many of your event reports or results recently Chris. :?: You know my feelings about MK2s etc  - serious question....
Are you beating £50K Escorts?

Not really difficult to get a pot in the big class these days. Club spec Pinto 2.1 Donkeys and 325's do it all the time. With a car like yours I'd be pretty hacked off not doing well in the overall standings in big entry (and not just s/v) rallies never mind those with only a few entries.

Erm isn't that effectively what you've done albeit 2wd?. :? Not knocking the fact that you have paid for rather than built the car yourself - just clarifying my comment.

Anybody know what happened to Notax today at Abingdon

Saw him on SS1 then he disappeared, by the time I got round to talk to him they had gone home

It's beginning to make financial sense now. The more DNF's the cheaper each one becomes. 8)

£50K on 14 DNF's = £3,571.42 per non finish. Whereas £50K on 15 DNF's = £3,333.33 per non finish.

The next one will be £3,125.00

Thats not including entry fees and on event costs though

Therefore hiding the rope becomes increasingly less significant.

Hello guys, sorry I am keeping a low profile these days - I am working flat out (as I need to to pay for this crazy hobby...)

The £50k you refer to is sadly a very distant memory. As you kow I have effectively paid for the same car to be built twice now and although the car is now very local to me I don't have the time or skill to do what is required. It has been very tempting to flog the new car and keep the original blue one which is not as pretty but far, far more reliable due to being much closer to factory spec.

I still haven't been able to match the best results in the blue car :( which got us a best of 6th OA and 1st in class at Emcos in 2009. The key reason is that every time I drive the new car I have to re learn it as it changes between every event (or even during the event!)

First the good news -

The shell appears to have been very well prepared from outset, only one minor issue found to date (see bad news)

The braking balance now seems ok, albeit the rear bias has been wound in so far they are doing very little. I subsequently found out that the Aston Vantage they come from is actually heavier at the back, so no wonder the rears are overkill on my car...

The electrics now seem sorted after a second new loom has been fitted (and had all surplus wires removed)

The fuelling system has been totally replaced, including new custom made ally tank, all new pumps etc - now ok

The cooling system is better, but engine temps still climb to almost 100c after a fast stage when queing for the next. Far better than the previous system which saw 130c, but not as good as the blue car which uses an original BMW rad...? I don't think the occasional 98c is going to do much harm, but the dash light is configured to come on at 95c so I do keep an eye on it

New suspension seems good though has created massive issues...

New carbon dash and interior works well and looks pimpy :)

Power steering. Abandoned the variable assistance electric Corsa column, now on Merc A Class which powers the rack not the column. Far better system.

Engine was ok, until first stage at last event when the rings went in a big way. Bit of a bugger it seemed fine pre event. I'm about to have a new engine built anyway, but the car won't be ready for tomorrow's Smeatharpe event so having to take the blue car again. Not ideal and the second time I've had to use it this year.

Bad news

When engine let go it also trashed exhaust, so new light weight one being made (no traditional baffles only angled metal plates)

New suspension has caused massive head aches - bent rear arms to a crazy angle at one event causing all sorts of handling issues. Arms now strengthened twice and now don't budge, but at rally before Abingdon the beam got banana'd, causing variable camber and breaking a drive shaft putting us out - so now on 16 DNFs! Also manged to bend the front arms too, which are the ones originally made by Granville, which amazed the new chap as he thought they very very well made. These have now had additional strenthening too.

Beam now strenthened and we also found that in the original build the diff was only located to the floor, these posts had cracked not surprisingly as they wern't mounted to anything (shown in photos earlier in thread). Now diff properly located to the cage.

Diff also needed TLC and although the standard ones have done me proud up to now I have decided to fit a Gripper diff now as I hope the new engine will put a bit more power through it...

So, finally the good news outweighs the bad :D

Apart from the mass of DNFs the biggest problem is that I have to relearn the car every time I drive it at the moment as the set up keeps changing and this doen't only affect handling but also knock on effects on braking distance etc... Once we finally have the car set up and I can get to know it I hope the good results will come our way. I was hoping to be at this stage about 5 moths ago, spend this year learning the car and considering doing a national championship next year... not sure I want to commit to that unless I can get the car reliable and consistent very soon.

Current jobs:

Build and fit new engine - S50, 3.2 head, Schrick cams, 3.0 bottom end, 3.2 sump, JE race pistons, nitrided crank, steel rods.

Intending to fit sequential, probably Drenth and ideally paddleshit too - although I must sell blue car to fund this. Seems a bit crazy swapping a nice rally car for a gearbox but there you go...

Fabricate new exhaust

Try and reduce heat in the cabin, the insulating blanket under the tunnel got ripped off some time ago, now looking at fixing some metal permanent sheilding.

The list of jobs is shortening and not before time...

No events planned for July or August so this should give us a chance to get the car sorted and tested - fingers crossed....

To anwer Simon's question about whether I am beating £50k Escorts - I am but only when they retire and I don't

I have yet to have a single event in Zippy (the 'new' car) where we have finished and the car has been fine throughout. Even when we do, I need a few events with the car having the same set up before I can drive it with as much committment as I could in the blue car. I know a number of the top Escorts use sequentials coupled with launch control and traction control and so the only fair comparison is if I fit this too, happy with idea of sequential but not convinced by TC and LC. Obviously make you faster but I want me controlling the car and not everything done by computers...

what a list!! but its good to get things off your chest!!! you have been in a situation!! but you did things in a somewhat blinkered way instead of coming on and talking to the some of the more clued up forum members and getting more than one view on the way things are done! rather than go with one mans (sometimes odd) ideas! :? even your new man could often need ideas as he's not doing this as a favour  ! this is constructive critisism and mean't in no way to be taking the piss. if your unsure of what someone is doing just ask a straight forward question on here and (most) members will give you the answer. good luck with the new man who's looking after the car, still on the fence about the clicky box being needed and launch/traction control (especially in the wet) will give you back more time than a split second gear change with loads of wheel spin!! food for thought! :)

I'll just take the piss then.....

You should've bought a f**king £50K Escort.

Seriously Chris - thanks for the update and the honesty. 8)
IMO you've made 'some' mistakes (as we all have) and sharing them helps others.

I agree with Dave tho about not taking second opinions being a misjudgement, but not being from a mechanical background myself, I understand why it's sometimes difficult to ask for advice.

NOBODY knows all there is to know, or anywhere near, the only chance for 'privateers' like us is to help each other by sharing what we know/don't know and our mistakes/victories.
There are some very well informed members on this forum nowadays and most seem to enjoy sharing their expertise. 8)
It would be nice to hear from your new car preparation team.

Good luck with it all - keep chasing those Escorts.

Bruvs - piss taking welcome, I'm thick skinned :D

Everyone I've spoken to who has gone to a sequential has dramatically improved their times - once they've got the hang of it. In the blue car I used to pace myself against Alan Thistlethwaite in his Aston Vantage and he gained a huge advantage with the clicky box.

I accept I was too reliant on 'one man's' ideas but situation made more difficult with car being kept in Wales the whole time so not easy to get a second opinion and the shell prep which was on the whole very good also put people off the scent...

Interesting to see you've gone with Porsche brakes v. my Aston ones, maybe someone on here will try some Lambo ones next?

Simon - yes buying a £50k Escort or virtually any £50k prepared car would have saved an awful lot of cash and grief but at least I'm in an unusual car (or it was until Bruvs carbon copy came along  )

I'm sure the car will get there eventually and now I'm in so deep I can only keep digging...

I'll do my best to post some updates and photos - not keen on the new chap doing it as his bill will get even bigger!

I'm on your side with the clicky boxes Chris. :D

What's prompted the Gripper diff decision?

SteveR's car was quite heavy on tyre use. After a days testing and set-up work it's now fantastic on tyres. Now we have good mechanical grip we now have heavy wear rate on CWP's  2 in 3 rallies

NoTax; re diffs and clicky boxes. The std ZF diff with multi plates and 30/30 or 30/60 ramps is well up to the job. The probs we have now found is the CWP and shafts.
Box wise buy one with drop gears on the output, that way you can use stronger higher ratio easy to find CWP's.

I'm just finishing off a high spec MkII with a Sadev box with flat shift. Using the big gear stick so not bothering with the paddle shift.Hopefully out testing in 2to3 weeks......

I'm determined to get the car as reliable as possible and whilst the standard diffs have held up well I thought it might be sensible with the new more powerful engine on the way. We also bust a shaft at a recent event and were stranded whereas I gather the Gripper will still allow some drive to one wheel. A standard diff can do this but only when very tight and running it like that caused too much understeer for my liking... Also supposed to be more progressive which may put less strain on CWP - or at least I hope so...
