Avto, probably not right to put it in Projects as it aint BMW based.

Re- a BMW V8, I am keeping this car 100% Historic legal, i.e, building her to proper Group A spec, the BMW engine thing did cross my mind for my road car, but that is far to good to mess with.

Here is an update on progress....................

Spot weld drilling......my favorite [xx(]

Image

Roof on for a trial fit, not being final fixed until the cage is welded in...........

Image

Thats better, "Moonroof" gone [8D]

Image

Finally, cage picture, I intend to get the proper Group A cage replicated, but in modern, legal thickness material........

Image

The stripdown continues......

Image

Wiring loom out......

Image

Impressive amount of droop/travel.......

Image

This cage is only a mock up, bought very cheap but won't be the finished item, I am having an exact replica of the Group A cage built eventually..........

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Some pics of the rot spots in the bulkhead, had a weigh up yesterday and I will definitely treat it to a bulkhead panel........

Image

Image

Image

At least the inner wings and chssis rails are all sound........

Image

The underside is extremely good..........

Image

Image

started removing the bonnet, then took the drivers front door off, and this happened!..........

Image

Image

So finally back down, doors off etc.........

Image

Image

Image

Image

picked this up yesterday, be warned, she aint pretty! Very solid shell though, it seems to have faired very well, even the bulkhead is better than my Vitesse, however, she has had quite a lot of dings and dents, nothing the hammer and dolly and some good old P45 can sort though. Genuine non-sunroof shell too.

Image

Image

Here is what happens when you tow a Rover backwards with no bonnet catch, forgot all about that!!!!!!!!! Bonnet was flapping on the way down the M6 so had to do a quick fix with a ratchet strap............

Image

Inner wings are very good............

Image

Image

Very dented roof...........

Image

Urrrgggghhh............

Image

Image

Evidence to the Jury, 2300/2600? Despite the Vitesse badge bar.....

Looks excellent, but at the time, needs must and all that.

Glad that the M3 went to Andy and someone who is using her to her full potential. What result did he get by the way?

Absolutely great! My second rally car was an SD1 back in 1988!!!!
Wot a fantastic car for the forests....terribly hard work on dry tarmac thou. Had it in the red and white of the TWR Bastos rovers that were winning the touring car championships back then.

Of all my rally cars, with the exception or the quattro, it was my favourite. No one else ever had one, it always created an audiance when it came out.

Sadly it was in my younger days when knowledge was lacking and the shell got too many stress fractures so it had to go.

Really miss it thou.

Good luck, and keep us up to speed!!!

Thanks for the kind words fellas....................

I am plodding on with the car, got most of the inside clean and ready for the cage..............

Image

Image

Image

Also did a bit of work on the spare shell I have, got it cleaned out inside, removed all the sound deadening in that one and gave her a thick coat of red lead to hold back the rust...........

Image

Image

Image

This is the car I am trying to replicate...............

Image

Image

In action at Chatsworth..............

Image

However, I find myself in a quandry. It seems after much discussion, that even if I build this to exactly Group A spec according to the Homolgation papers, I still wont get a logbook as it is over 3lt. So, what to do...................

I am continuing with the buld as planned, and go ahead with the Rover V8, but, I may get clever, and have a second engine, maybe a smaller capacity BMW V8 (how small were the 530 engines? 3lt?) that is interchangeable, and build the car how I want to, with better brakes etc.

The Red car is on Ebay (ends Thursday) and I shall use the money from that sale to move the silver car on, so expect to see her caged up soon.

Presumptious perhaps?.........................

Its shouldn't matter thats its over 3 litre as its only 2 valves per cylinder. The 3000cc cap only applies to multivavle engines 8)

My understanding too.

The original proposal was for 2.5L multi valve & 3.0L two valve (making TR8s & some £££hysterics illegal), but both were increased by 500cc before it was passed.

Sorry for being quiet on this thread of late, don't worry, I haven't been slacking. Good news is now I can run an engine up to 3500cc so she will be sticking with the original V8, and that now opens the whole playing field up fopr me as I don't have to build her to Homologation spec now, so I can pretty much build her as I want.

Here how things are progressing..............

Aerial hole filled.........

Image

Fuel filler filled.........

Image

As this is the set up I intend to use.............

Image

And finally, the big one, collected her yesterday from having cage done, really pleased with it.....................
