dave, go back to page 4 on this topic and you can see that the beam is solid bushed and bolt tubes run up into the cage, picking up the diff.

Sorry, "extra" probably wasn't the right word there. The bar I was wondering on is the bar that bends down to the floor of the trunk area where it connects to the diff mounting assembly.

Thanks for pointing me back to page 4. That was exactly what I was looking for. :)

Today we mainly drilled

.........and drilled

......and tapped

Bruvs S50 > M54 Throttle Body Conversion

S50 and M54 engines share the same inclination and the cylinders are at the standard 91mm centres ....Unfortunately thats were the similarity ends

One of the many issues with trying to make these fit is fact that the S50 throttle body stud pattern overlaps the M54 stud pattern - badly
I've seen people tackle this issue by retaining the m54 stud postions and then adapting the throttle body flanges and fixings to clamp them in place - I wasnt happy with this solution

After some thought ( & brain ache) we've gone with a double plate:
The first plate is bolted to the head using countersunk nuts.
This first plate then gets a new set of studs to secure the 2nd plate with.
This 2nd plate is then studded to suit the throttle bodies.
The hardest part was coming up with the answer, the rest is just laborious, Another issue is that you cant drop a 8ollock marking out and drilling your billets  - If this had happened we probably would have killed each other

Early progress on Plate 1 >

Ports to finish, they will have a slight slope, to match the head. So they will effectively just be an extension to the head. Need to get the o-ring grooves CNC'd too >

A good sight 8) >

Pretty chuffed with the outcome so far, i was even happier when the dowelled throttle bodies slid over all 9 studs :D , we are only pretending to be engineers !

:?: For good torque - Now the inlet tract is some 35mm longer, should we still run the 3.0 longer trumpets or fit the shorter Evo ones ?

Thank you C119.
If it all goes to plan, we'll stick the trumpets into a collector and try to get some cold/ram air 8)

You have identified a potential issue - the longer inlet is likely to shift peak torque to higher revs, though I suspect that you might need even shorter trumpets than the B32 ones if you are trying to replicate the same bellmouth to valve seat distance.

I was told that the inlet harmonics can be affected by the exhaust harmonics also when there is significant valve overlap, though I doubt if the effect is 1st order magnitude.

This is probably going to be a suck it and see process to see what works....

Keep the posts coming - they are really interesting.

That may help with rally gearing :)

You are quite right, theres more science/theory in it than i know - all we can do is read a little and have a go. It is a voyage of discovery

I'm not sure what the difference in trumpet/funnel length is. They dont look too hard to swap, if they interchange easily we will take both sets to the R.R. for comparison 8)

Here we go...

He can certainly stick metal together 8)

Image

Theres some nice details in the roof too, i'll try and take a few more picys soon

edit:

Tying the inner wing chassis boxes to the turrets was a factory way of stiffening E30's cab's up, it makes sense to me.

Preferred the turret top plates to be skinned from the underside, you can see the weld around the inside of the hole
