Otterburn is a great place Paul, you'll love it and then realise what a shithole 3 laps is and then never go back to the likes of 3 Laps.
Very true I did Epynt and only wanted to do propa rallies after but..... I can do 2.5 little SV's for the price of one visit to a propa rally ! In the ideal world I would be on the ferry across the Irish sea every weekend 
So until the numbers come up i shall try new SV's and the odd "real" rally when cash allows....... RWD IT'S THE ONLY WAY !!!!
I've been giving this a lot of thought recently and combined with the fact that my weekends are becoming more 'precious', I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather just do 2 or 3 decent events per year. 
Come to Jersey next year  
I've more or less decided to give up with tarmac.  I don't like going really fast any more and I prefer the plan of having a good skid about with (albeit it marginally) lower top speeds. 
I'd intended to work on another (4-pot) BMW during the Winter months, but I'm not sure that I can be arsed to build another half-baked inappropriate (for gravel fun) car. 
Probs just gonna buy an 'abandoned project' (cheap, likely slow) RWD car, that's equipped with more 'dedicated' bits and can hack some sump guard skiing. 
Gonna give the compact a whizz round the Riponian ruts in Feb, if I haven't found a more suitable car. 
Deffo keeping the compact whatever tho, for some occasional SVs or forum events. 
Here's my take on it.......
I go rallying cos I love it, I also like the social side of it. Having worked for a professional team, I understand what happens on large multi-venue events, you bugger off in a morning, come back for 30 minutes at lunch, then go again till the day is over (ok, not quite like that), however, I love the atmosphere and close-nit persona of a SV, you go out, your service crew can have a watch, then you come back in, sort the car out, have a natter, grab a brew and off again, I really like that. I know that some folks may see that as boring, and don't get me wrong, I would like to, and will one day do an Ireland or Manx event, but for now I will stick to cheaper, quality SV's. Having said that, my vote is still for ROTM next year (oh the contradiction!) as long as the car is all in one piece, I will 100% be doing this event. Nothing has really 'brought anything on' - it was my intention to build the blue compact as a 'forest spec' car. When I used it to re-shell the red compact, the plan was to build either a breadvan or another compact and use a compact as a 'forest spec' car.
I'm just not convinced that an E36 will make a budget friendly strong/reliable 'forest spec' car and I can't be arsed building one to find out that it doesn't. ....
200 BHP BMW 4-pot power is £££ or a non-BMW PITA, gearboxes hmmm, suspension arms etc hmmm, weight, brakes for 15" wheels, engine crossmember & mountings etc, etc. TBH, I think I'd be quite happy with a 150 BHP X-flow, 5-speed type 9, 5-linked English, strong Escort, but I can't afford one.
I'd consider a Sunbeam or 3 door Cossy, possibly even an E30, another Manta or Chevette, maybe even a RWD Mk3/4/5. If there were any appropriate E36s I'd have a look. I'm not bothered about (can't afford) a fancy/mega fast thing, just something that'll do some skids in the woods without dropping in bits all the time. BTT.  I'm game for ROTM again, Lee.
Totally agree about SVs being a more sociable gathering. 
But when there's a few of you together competing, you're usually all out on the stage at different times anyway & hardly see each other. 
Like for like (& driver for driver  ) the compact would murder them, they just aren't what I want. I'm quite happy to come last in a car that I enjoy driving.
Heavy 6-pots up front is wrongness. They can get away with it on tarmac to a limited extent, but they're party poopers for the gravel skids imo and the weight would contribute to the car wrecking.
They're a handful. Blue car is tons better than the red car was, but I'm interested to see how Lee finds his on a venue with proper corners and swift direction changes.

I did mention to you at the RB rally, it would be an option to put an S14 in, but lets see about that one. Is there some tight, twisty stuff?
We've been spoiled with the S50 mid-range grunt, proper gearbox req'd with an S14. 
Likewise Lee, our sunbed was good (won anwcc 1600 championship) and i put a lot of hours into it, but its got f/a11 on the b-m and i wouldnt consider going back. . .admitedly an s14 on m3 hubs has always been a good recipe but it is such a complete package i'm/we are sold.

I'm surprised it's that much. SV 40 ish miles = £200 ish tarmac MV 60-100 miles = £300 ish Less tyre wear at places like Otterburn/Epynt/Mull than on a SV B&B usually about the same Bit more fuel costs but outweighed by tyre bills Less bales etc to hit on MV events Mile per pound Mull is one of the best VFM events going, just getting there costs plus the inevitable bar bill. But as Lee says SV definitely more social.
