As anyone with a E30 or a E36 Compact will be all too aware of, the common problem is the rear axle which, because of the nature of the rear arm set up has an inherent issue with too much negative camber, causing often catastrophic uneven rear tyre wear, especially in rallying.
The rear arm travel goes from positive camber at high ride height or full droop to negative on low ride height or full compression.
The problem can be minimised by elongating the mounting holes and the use of camber adjustment bolts: which most of us have done at some point.
However, this only alters the degree of camber at a static point, the arc of suspension travel remains the same and the problem with tyre wear and constantly changing degrees of camber is unaffected.
After many long nights of experimentation and a LOT of cad work, making various jigs and design alterations,
I CAN NOW OFFER A SOLUTION WHICH FIXES THE PROBLEM AND GIVES NEUTRAL CAMBER AND NEUTRAL TOE THROUGH THE FULL RANGE OF REAR SUSPENSION TRAVEL.
I have been running the new design on a car now for a few months and I can confirm the issue is indeed solved. The rear tyre wear is now even across the full width and the handling is superb.
The solution has the additional benefit in that you can still use the elongated mounting holes to adjust your camber and toe, if required, with the joyous result of having the same camber and toe throughout the FULL range of suspension travel.
Would anyone be interested in having the modification carried out?
The basic conversion would on an exchange basis. (You send in your stripped rear beam and bare rear arms with no hubs, thoroughly degreased and cleaned, with rear bushes in place)
I can also add camber adjustment kits and / or rear arm strengthening for additional cost.
I have a figure in mind for the conversion but what is the general consensus on the idea and what anyone is prepared to pay for the work involved?
