85 318i here in the USA

Postby irish44j » Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:23 am

Thanks for the add, can't believe I wasn't already on this forum, so I have a lot of reading to do. Anyhow, here's my quick introduction. My car is a 1985 318i (originally with an M10 for two years, then with an M42 for 6 years, and just recently swapped in a M50TU).

For a number of years I ran SCCA rallycross (US-style "grass-o-cross" as I've heard it called) and did quite well, winning the East Coast championships and the Mid-Atlantic division twice - competing against quite a few BMWs as well as Miatas, Volvos, and other mostly older RWD cars.

A few years back I caged the car and started on the stages. So since then we've done five full rallies as well as four "rallysprints" which are basically shorter one-day rallies with less transits.

Nothing too fancy on the car - now has M50TU mated to G240 transmission from the M42 (for as long as it lasts), and a 4.10 LSD rear. Suspension is fairly basic with Ground Control-style "fake" coilovers up front with 250/10 springs and e36 M3 stock springs in the rear, and using Bilstein HD shocks, because that's about all I can afford at the moment. z3 steering rack.

Anyhow, hope to get some fresh ideas here and some insights on what you all do to make your cars faster/better/etc. Here are some pics
