E36 2.8 Compact Project......

I recently bought this road car to see how well it would go with potential to be a competition car.

The guy who built it done a great job & everything looks factory standard.









Lots of thoughts & lots of questions on which way to go with it but thought I'd fire up some pics first.

Whats the idea then David?

Start gathering up parts for it like 4.4 diff, decent suspension, seats, belts & eventually cage.

I've only driven it twice up the road so far !!

I'd like to get it out on a track day to see how it goes before I do too much to it.

It's had a few engine mods so should be making decent enough power.

Suspension will be top of the list but still trying to suss out the different options, it's always been Mk1/2 Escorts I've had before so this is a wee bit different.

I thought I'd throw up a few pics to get going with & see how others have done similar cars.

Ye can see the M50 inlet, M3 exhaust etc. If its had remap it should be 220-230 depending if its also had cams could be more?

Suspension wise, the front we have legs made to take Escort long inserts and coilover springs.

Rears are the problem as i dont like coilovers on the back, other people use them tho without issues.

Its got USA M3 spec cams & an END Tuning remap according to previous owner & have receipts for them too from the US. Its got a Hayward & Scott stainless steel back section of exhaust that the previous owner paid £700 !!

Tell me more about the front legs to take Escort inserts ? That would be interesting.....I've a pair of NEW adjustable tarmac inserts here that I may put to good use if I can get the bodies !!

Hi David, I too have a tarmac rally car with a 2.8 engine with the same mods, i am in lincolnshire where are you? We use coils at the rear but they are race spec with too little spring length. the car is quick in the dry but can't seem to get the grip in the wet or slippy conditions.

Good to hear you have a similar car & probably faced similar challenges !! Lol !!

I'm in Donegal, Ireland.

What coilovers are you using & what length/rate of springs ?

Sorry I haven't replied earlier about the rear suspension. We are testing some changes at Blyton this Sunday, by swapping Bilstein coilovers ( developed by Phil Littlewood of E30 2.5 RWD challenge fame) with the Gaz system we have been using. I will report back. The spring rates used on racing compacts are 250's but we retro fitted 175's. The travel is very short on these compact cup race spec coilovers.
