It was certainly an interesting stage to spectate - we saw Martins car overtake Chris at some speed (and approaching a bend) and then a huge cloud of smoke..... I wasn't sure who had come off, who's car had gone bang or whether there had been a collision

A few seconds later we saw Martin pull off the stage and Chris drive out ok - phew!

After working out that Chris was now in 3rd place, it was literally on the next lap that we saw smoke coming off the tyre and were wondering why they weren't slowing down!

All in all great to watch and a FANTASTIC result

I am thinking that maybe I should get behind the wheel myself to join in the fun.... (but not in the BMW - that's a bit fast and scary for me )

Sequential gearbox on Martins car with a very sensitive shift. He shifted from 2nd to first at some point, his instruments recorded the 7950rpm figure. The chip used in the DME has a 7800 limit.

The engine was only a temporary unit, it was still sat on a pallet in my unit the day before the car left for Barbados, he just never got 'round to changing the rod bolts. I know for sure he has 2 other options on standby, and should be competing again soon. He also had problems with the brake fluid on Saturday, and mentioned stage times could have been improved upon

As at the last couple of events I need to say a big 'thank you' to Spaceman who not only looked after the car at the weekend but also trailered it all the way from Wales and back on his own

Really good to meet Martin too, very nice chap, very nice car too gutted for him - but on the positive side at least it didn't happen in Barbados (he has competed there 10 times!) and it was only a temporary engine as Russ mentions... Methinks his budget is a bit different to mine...

Russ' version of events is exactly what Martin mentioned to me too - risk of sequential box too big for me (the fact it would cost £6000 is neither here nor there... )

I agree his car sounded great - tempted to follow suit but noise checks at this event were VERY lax - the Aston guys were ASKED to put on their noisy exhausts!!! And Simon's last year wasn't exactly quiet either At least noise is one thing I don't have to worry about with my car - still only 89db!

The stages this year were in a different league to last year's event - really hard for co drivers and really good fun for drivers... Definitely intend to enter next year too (sorry Spaceman...) be great if we could get a bigger BMW turnout too. Gives Simon a year to find his mojo... and maybe to accept that an E36 M3 powered compact can be very competitive (we could both have had top ten finishes if luck had been on our side - and against the stiffest competition we are likely to encounter!)

I've done both RBMRs now, with Andy Davo's dad in the Darrian. As Notax said above - this is a cracking SV event - one of the best. Much improved stage layouts this year, thanks to organisers listening to comments from last year - and acting on them! Great party on Sat eve. Red Arrows and Lancaster flypast on Sunday - just to top off the proceedings.

We were seeded car 3 and were leading the 2WD class D (same class as the awesome Astons) comfortably overnight. Stage 6 we had got to within 6 seconds of Ray Brammer's time, posting second fastest o/a. Talent for speed is a genetic thing in the Davo family! Going all out for a fastest o/a stage time on SS7 - when a rear suspension rose joint broke, generating 30 deg toe-in on my side. Didn't do a lot for the handling! All comments that this was due to the co-driver's girth are.....probably correct!

Still a shadow of doubt if the new Station Commander at RAF Marham will permit the event to run in 2010 - but hoping it does - definitely recommended. Same organising team are running the Lynn Stages at Sculthorpe on 8th November.

N.B. Anyone who thinks drift club activities are fun - drifting a RWD car in 2nd gear, etc. should try sitting in with either Davo Snr or Jnr. 45 deg drifts, perfectly controlled over huge distances - but flat in 4th/5th at 90+ mph (in the Darrian's six-speeder). Awesome! And a priviledge to witness close-up.

(Just in case anyone wondering why I'm in here - my other claim to membership is that I run an E36 323i as my everyday road/commute car - and love it! 190k miles and sweet as a nut! Instant BMW fan. I'm also sad enough to remember doing events competing against Martin Stockdale in southern France - when Martin was in his Vauxhall Monza! Top man.)
