THE DREADED EWS! HELP

Postby GAJ1 » Tue Oct 11, 2011 7:54 pm

Hope anyone can help. I bought a chip for the 1995 Compact 318Ti Rally car, mainly to up the rev limiter to 7000rpm. Put it in and the car won't start (cranks over). I gave the chip supplier all the details including the BMW chip number soi could be matched correctly. Chip supplier says i need to calibrate the EWS to the ECU with the new chip. Still runs OK on the BMW chip.
I am trying to do this on the cheap and bear in mind the car is not road legal (sorned) so i would have to trailer it anywhare which i don't want to do. Would you recommend any of these Fleabay cables and software to plug into a laptop for about £25-30?
The internet is very confusing. Disable EWS, Can't do it! Yes you can. Wire this that and the other. Buy this. Oh it's USB and it won't work on a laptop with vista and much much more info that most of is probably rubbish.
Just doing my head in now. Please bring back my twin 40 webers :? Any help would be appreciated. Even a cheap mobile diagnostic guy near Warrington.
Lastly, i want to find out if the chip is dud so i'm not wasting my time and more money.

Most diagnostics will not re-align ews, but in general it shouldnt make a difference as aftermarket chips disable the ews anyway. Your cheapest bet would be an earlier ECU and put the ebay chip into that. However given the quality of all the ebay chips ive seen i wouldnt recomend using them, they overfuel horribly and revving the car more will exacerbate any problems caused by the chip making the engine run lean/rich at various points in the rev range. In almost all dyno tests ive seen the ebay chips cause a drop in power output too.
Just my two pence worth.

The chip supplier says otherwise. I just would like help finding a way forward from where iam now, ie aftermarket chip that will not let the car start. I thought if you get an old ECU you still need to get all the other stuff inc keys as well and the chip will need to be correctl to the ECU. I may return the chip for a refund and jack the car in if it's this hard to tune on the cheap then i will stick with old fashioned carbs.

Try Steve Booth at A1 Fuel services in Leigh 01942 261600 and tell him that I sent you. He has some good knowledge of BMW's and some good diagnostic equipment too.

Well the battery went flat and now the key has lost it's code with the ECU. Totally pi$$ed off now  . Will have to get my arm yanked off for someone to remove the EWS from the brain and i guess i will then have to rewire the transponder  . At least the car may run like any other conventional car!! If you have this installed on your E36 and your battery goes flat god help you!
Re the previous comment. Got an ECU from a J reg E30 and the plug connection was nothing like the same.
Oh, and by the way, if you try to do this DIY through the OBD connection, the pin outs are different depending on what t shirt the foreman was wearing on the day so don't expect the BMW software and associated plug to your PC to work. All i could see with it is the EWSwhich tells me there is an error. 'NO CODE' which i cannot fix as i cannot connect with the DME. Total bo!!ocks :?

The chip is on it's way back for a refund and i am going to get the car remapped and EWS removed. Seems the only sensible option with this set up.

A couple of guys have told me about these lot and they are only in Widnes so not far to trailer the car to them. Spoke to Mike there and he appears pretty knowledgable but we will see.

http://www.powertune.org/index.php

I am taking it tomorrow afternoon and leaving it with them for the day

I will keep you updated of how it all pans out.

By the way, i stuck the E30 chip in the old ECU to see if it would do anything. Nothing. Dead. So i reckon buying another chip won't work.

i finally got the car back today after dropping it off last wednesday afternoon! He reckoned a day to do it. I must be hoping for too much really!

The EWS is still on the car. Reckoned he could not remove it!! After saying the opposite last week.

Mapping done. Tops out at 145hp after initially reading 131hp according to the paperwork (Sunbeam is 123hp on a 30 year old 1.6 8v). That's without a cat and large bore exhaust fitted. One positive is i have a cloned ECU (std) if the other fails, however, i have not tried it yet.

So all in all i have failed on both counts with EWS and power. I guess these figures in the 150-160hp range just chipped are dependant on the car and the mapper! Really ready to ditch it if the car under perfoms on the NWS. Can't be bothered with this electronics malarky.

Anyway it will sit in the yard while i have other jobs to do. Losing interest sadly. Just wish i could have straight answers to my questions. Hey Ho!

Sorry to hear that avto. Mark told us last night at the club. Did he tell to about the one at Tranny's. White 318Ti. He was half thinking about it himself. There is a black Ti in Mal's scrappy's in Haydock but the engines been messed with (bits missing)

Perhaps the best route is the Ally 6 pot!
