Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingUpdate,
Cage is in, 2 little bits of welding done, exhaust skidded and water leak fixed..... for now. There was a little hose under the inlet manifold with 2 bends in, got one form BMW, but of of the bends was 180deg the wrong way! Had a ganders at Kevo's car, gave bmw the number, and it meant nothing to them. So I made one. It seems to have worked so fingers crossed. Here's the cage anyway. A bulkhead plate my mate made as mine was missing. Sealed up all the little gromet holes up too. Just chucked the cage in to get it to be fitted. Finally got her out, bit of weight saved there. Made some tabs to slot her into place before we welded her in. Used some Tiger seal which has done the trick nicely. Had the airline ready so it didnt burn the paind when we welded her in. Cage half in Base plates in, and we made sure it was welded and sealed all around the plate. Cage wend in lovely with a real nice fit. Just bought some fabric to do headlining, bought a bias pedal adjuster too. Next is..... When I got money.
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally Thing
I think you meant say `i've blanked off the hole previously used for my Ski's' Nice work, you've made ground there
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingHey lads,
Haven't been on for a while, just saving and working. Progress is definately getting there now. Half way through fitting the suspension at the moment, but sorted a few photos out for you all to have a ganders. Instead of chopping F out of the back seats, I decided to spend a little time on them. The put the headlining in, pain in the large end! With the cage in then And seats 'n' belts now fitted properly Bought full challenge spec billies of Paul off here, which was good as brand new ones have gone up a bit. Double the size! Bought some strengthening plates from PDL wand offset top mounts Took them apart and used my better condition legs, and strengthened them Tool made by Kevo for installing them, many thanks son Primered and sprayed up Billy yellow ready to go back together. Built and ready to go on Then bought these 15'' wheels, then test fitted them...... clunck!!! Too wide! Doh! So that's it for now. Plenty left to do though! Cheers
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingNice work Garth, you're definately on the right lines there
Whats next? and how's Kevo's wheels?
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingGood job Garth.
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingKevo's wheels?
Yeah glad its going good. Doing the back beam bushes and suspension next.
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally Thingi should have said hows kevo's 318 ?
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingAhhh yes soory.
It's good by all accounts. He's finished his garage. We're doing a rally in September so should be a good laugh!
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingTook the ream beam off today to change the bushes..........
WHAT A PIG OF A JOB!!!! Just to get the beam off. Anyone got any tips? Shouldv'e asked that before I took it off whilst sending claret everywhere!
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally Thinga pile of tyres under the beam and a big pry bar worked for me, but it is bloody heavy.
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingIt helps to drift the mounting studs up through the beam and into the interior of the car.
Undo the mounting nuts. Cover the recesses in the car from which they will emerge with a sack or similar so the studs don't fly through a window when they free off Beat them up into the car. (They are splined where they fit through the chassis) My experience is that the beam may still try to hang on even once the studs are removed - the bushings have a metal nose that sits inside a counterbore on the chassis and it usuallty corrodes solid. Judicious heat and leverage are your friends.
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingGot the beam off, ouch, blood everywhere, so after a few odd jobs shes now ready for MOT. Here's some pics.
Ride height is huge on the front, springs are a bit too stiff, so we had a shop around and found this company who'll make any springs to your rating for i cant remember how much. I'll know when I send for them. Rear arms strengthened and fitted to the beam. Fitted the diff before I put it in, even though it weighd a tonne, I just had piece of mind that the diff bolts were torqued up nicely. Jobs left are MOT, Guards, Fuel Lines inside and Perspex. Probably a lot more actually. Hope you like it.
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally Thingright now i see why kevo never answered about progress on his car LOL!
WHats it go like Garth?
Re: Garths 318 Road Rally ThingDiff is a pleasure, but I cant wait to give it blast in the next few weeks. Got insurance quote, from CCI, £394. David Auden was something like £800odd.
Kevo's car is still going strong. He did an autotest up a farm on the weekend and had a right old laugh. I'll pop some pics on here if he wants.
