125i coupe (E82) rally gravel/snow, Finland

Postby Susiraja » Sat Dec 20, 2014 5:27 pm

Years from my last post, but hopefully quality replaces quantity :D Since my driver (I'm "only" a codriver) in Finland is "downgrading" from evo9 to a 2wd car and Finnish regulations next year allow non factory homologated models to compete we'll be driving something special. Starting point is a 125i coupe (E82) 2008 manuaali M-sport. The car has seen 87tkm in German traffic before starting its new career as a Finnish rally star.

The car arrived to Finland on Thursday and now the interior has been stripped. Tomorrow it will continue it's journey to a chassis guy who will weld in the chromomolypden (hopefully even remotely correctly spelled) roll cage. Should be a decent cage since he has done cages for Makelä Auto Tuning. A tuning shop you propably haven't even heard of. Google it or MAT tuning. Youl'll be amazed when you what kind of a "tuning" company we are talking about here ;) After that the exhaust manifold and the inlet manifold will be changed to match the 130i model. The electrics will be done WRC style --> light, simple and lots of switches in the center console. It will have Tatech t38lite box and Race chronoly dash information collection system.

Suspension will be Bigem with hydraulic pump stop and with biggest possible extra tanks. Springs will be somewhere around 32-35kg in the front and 21-25kg in the back. Fast steering from Karpiola and AP racing brakes.

Differential and the end ration hasn't been decided yet. Something short for the end ratio because you don't really need that much top speed in Finland. Around 185km/h should be enough. Gearbox will propably be a Samsonas 5speed dogbox. Clutch most likely something from Sachs.

The aim is that car will be in it's first rally on the 22nd of February. The Finnish rally championship will start already on the 23rd of January with Arctic Lapland rally. It has 290km of special stages. Basically WRC Finland, but on -20-30 celcius and only two special stages(excluding super specials) which are under 30km long. The longest stage is 50km! In the Arctic we'll be driving a BMW M3 E36, 4speed dog box, 4,88 end ratio, Öhlins/Reiger suspension. The aim is to win our class, but in such a long rally anything can happen. You need to adjust your speed, concentrate and also listen to your car and the condition of your tyres.

If anyone is interested in having something to remember when your old in your rocking chair --> the E36 can be rented for the rest of the Finnish championship rallies. Usually around 90-110km of special stages. Just arrive and drive. Driving lessons for snow and gravel are also available. Jari Kihlman(the driver) has been an instructor in the Juha Kankkunen driving academy. Last year with an evo9 lancer we were usually driving stage times 3-5 in the main 4wd class of the Finnish championship. Ask for an offer from Jari by email jari.kihlman(at)uta.fi If you fancy you can also ask and offer to have your own E82 or E87 one series build ;)

Not much to show for yet, but here is the base car. The knterior is now dismantled and the roll cage guy starts his work. The colour will stay the same.

Life works in mysterious ways and the E36 will be running on the Arctic Lapland rally is also dark blue.
