Re: E36 compact tarmac carNot unless you get cutting out more metal! 1050 - 1150kg ish

Re: E36 compact tarmac carThe compact Cup car that I raced last year weighed in around 1035kg,,,, m44 engine, box and std 168mm diff. Running 15" rims, glass and a single seat and harness
1 guy went crazy and removed the seats for the std springs on the rear (coil overs) and it was knocking on 1000 kg. But a rally car with guards, extra seat and harness +handheld extinguisher must be knocking on 1075 kg
Re: E36 compact tarmac carWell, i saved 15kg on each door, about 30kg, 3kg on the bonnet, about 10kg with the heater unit and his liquid, and my rollcage weights less than this, as its CrMO and weight 32kg.
The rear screen is sooo heavy, i think about 10kg, and the complete polycarb window kit weights only 12kg. I run stock engine m42, stock gearbox, only modification is the medium case diff. The loom is all new and taken to a minimum. All the no needed brackets and studs are removed. I really want to weight the car!! When do you say glass on your ex-compact, do you mean glass windows or polycarb windows?
Re: E36 compact tarmac carThe compact has to run all the glass in the championship.
I weighed the std compact door to be 31.4kg,,, I removed all trim, mirror, glass, regulator and door bar (3kg) and it was 18kg bare without cutting any metal from skin. I'm surprised that you said rear screen was heavy,,, I was surprised how light it was! Std loom weighs just over 14kg and can be taken down to just under 4kg with no abs and electric window wiring.
Re: E36 compact tarmac carIf you are that concerned with weight why did you leave the sound deadening in the front ? It weighs a lot you would be surprised how much Peter
Re: E36 compact tarmac car
The reason is time. I leave home at 8 in the morning an arrive at 21, 21:30 at night. Then I work in the car 1hour or 1hour and a half some days. So spend a day or 2 scratching that rubber (a weekend)...i thought was too much for the weight saving. I began with the rear arches and engine bay, needs too much effort, so i leave the rest as it is. Maybe the next car. The loom is only lights, engine, wipers, horn and dash. Not weighted, but lighter than the stock loom for sure.
Re: E36 compact tarmac carAh, and i´m still having problems with the steering.
Yesterday trying the car, I took a 90º left corner and the booty came out, but much more than other times. I manage to control the car turning to the right but when I wanted to turn the steering wheel quickly back i felt like i'm fighting with the wheels and with the power steering at the same time. If I turn slow, the steering is reasonably soft, but when I steer quickly it only let me turn at a certain speed, further than that I have to turn REALLY hard. So i think the problem is not the power steering force, is the SPEED at the powersteering system can turn. Start thinking on get away the quickener (and perhaps save it for another forest spec car) and fit a Z3 rack. Thanks!
Re: E36 compact tarmac carYesterday I tweaked the steering pump.
Taken apart of the car: Dismantled: And this is the flow/pressure control valve. I wanted to raise the pressure to a maximum and try the steering for seeing if it makes any change on the feel. So I removed all the shims of the relief valve, which sits in the interior of the FCV, and I streched the big spring too. (not in the pic) Then, refitted the pump, when I´m trying to flush the system, lock to lock, on the 6º movement the pressure line went bang and gave all the engine bay a beautiful layer of steering fluid....s***... The bad news are that I felt no change on the steering even with that superhigh pressure until the hose exploded. So now i´m learning how to increase flow instead of pressure, and try again.
Re: E36 compact tarmac carAfter the PAS disaster i decided to change the plan on fitting the steering multiplier, as i think that the problem is not the steering effort, is the steering SPEED.
So i bought a corsa C EPAS and I fitted it before the steering multiplier, so the PAS will work at the steering wheel speed, and not the x2 speed that gives the multiplier. And thats the frankenstein column: I hope will try it in a few days, i will post the results....fingers crossed....
Re: E36 compact tarmac carEpas fitting was an absolutely sucess! Only need to add some fans for cooling the epas ecu as it get hot while parking and turn many times at very low speeds.
But in road is an absolutely dream, i have 1.5 turns LtL and the turn speed is faster than any car i drove ever, corrections during sideways are like a kart and catching the rear when comes out is soooo easy. Thanks!
Re: E36 compact tarmac carHere the corner weight results!
The car is 53%-47% weight distribution and a perfect 50% weight side to side. My codrivers weights 80kg and i weight 83kg, so with we sitting inside the car, all the wheels will weight near the same. The handling is awesome, better than any other car i drove in the past.... Total weight with full tank, 1076kg. Without it or with 15-20 liters of petrol ready to race, it will be near 1040-1050kg. No fiberglass. Im very happy with the result.
Re: E36 compact tarmac carYesterday i had the first event. I made a mistake setting the rear suspension and this gave videos like this:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=THGvTxDNysQ Ended with a little crash 2km after hahaha....
Re: E36 compact tarmac carHi all.
After some events raced with street tyres, we notices a problem with the EPAS system, with more sticky tyres like rally slicks, the EPAS steering seems to overload and keeps turning off in middle of a corner, only with hot tyres, so upgrading this soonly becames a must. We know the steering column motor is capable of currents up to 70amp, but the ecu seems to work at around 40amp maximum and the stock 50amp fuse confirms this. We stated that our problem is the ECU, and we start to design and build a totally new corsa EPAS ECU based on an arduino board. At the moment is working reasonably well, but needs to correct some tiny problems, and i think in the next weeks I can post a video with the whole system working in our homemade ECU. Thanks!!
Re: E36 compact tarmac carHave you tried playing around with pulley sizes I:e speeding or slowing the pump ?
http://www.bruvsmotorworks.co.uk 320is, 330is rallying!
Re: E36 compact tarmac carNot yet, at the moment i have fully eletric powersteering and that is the one im having problems.
We get the PS working in the new ECU, but the chinese board dont like the high current and ended fried. With hydraulic PS i had problems too, i think all systems works bad with the 2:1 steering multiplier. Last chance is going back to hydraulic PS, a Z3 rack and a 1.5:1 multiplier, a friend have this configuration on his e30 and says it works fine....
