Hi all.

Just tried the car this afternoon, and have a few issues with the steering.

As you know the column was chopped and i have fitted a steering 2:1 multiplier.

Now the feel going sideways is lovely and the return to straight line is far far more easy, but the steer effort was multiplied x2! Its like a non-PAS car now.

Is there any mod (apart from my arms), to make the steering more lighter?

Thanks!

Now i have 1.6 turns lock to lock, so add 1 turn will be an option when all other options are down.

What about adding a shim below the relief valve spring? Will more pressure raise the assistance?

Thanks!

Well..this night i have noticed a strange symptom...

With the car jacked up, turn the wheel from lock to lock two times and the steering become sooo soft.

Then, turn on the engine, and with the car still in the air, the effort needed to turn the wheel raises a lot.

Then i take the car to the floor and turning raises a bit more, but only a tiny bit, nearly the same stifness than the car in the air.

I dont know what to think...

My guess is that the 2:1 multiplier has doubled the ratio but halved the torque, that's how a power steering rack works by torque or twisting motion

So now you have to put twice the effort on the steering wheel to get the power steering working as it should, result heavy steering

I don't think that raising the pressure will work, your problem is in the valve block on the rack not allowing the oil pressure through

Sellholm can supply a high ratio steering rack they manufacture 2 versions listed as 1 turn equals 61mm movement or 1 turn equals 73mm movement
you would have to work that out as a ratio yourself

I find their website hard work because I don't speak the language but if you are interested

Website http://www.sellholm.se

Steering racks listed as "Styrväxlar" then "BMW E36, E46 ZF kortslagig modifierad för div. 1 Rallycross" not cheap 12425 SEK = £1066.83

Contact sellholm@telia.com they do speak English

These racks are not an option for the UK as they are LHD unless you are running a LHD car

We run a sellholm 2.5 power rack on the 320is, very good :-)

Sorry gartrac i missed yout previous post.

1300euro is too much for spending on a steering rack, i have tons of other bits that i need to upgrade with that money.

I did a little search on the net and it seems that the stock pump of my M42 give 90bar of pressure, and the e46 pumps give 120-130bar as a base.

It seems too that upgrading the relief valve spring is nothing to do with steering lightness, because it only works when the pressure its too hich, like when we hit the locks.

I´ll post the results.
