I'm a bit confused though because the Gp.4 inserts are 40mm diameter and I thought the B6 inserts were 36mm diameter.

Definitely both 40mm otherwise my front struts would be flapping about.
Converting front struts with escort inserts is a longstanding modification which has been done on many types of car. I've done it on all my BM's and it has always worked well.

Car went really well on Granite City at the weekend. No problems and nothing fell off.
Very poor seeding at 86 out of 116, but we finished 61st.
Driver was very rusty ( first time out for 5 years, not counting two abortive attempts in my sunbeam)
Event was a bit rough, very slippy and very foggy on a couple of stages so not really the best for learning a new car.
It is great fun and easy to drive and very tail happy.
Brakes worked well altough I could do with a bit more rear bias.
My front bilstein conversion also worked really well but I think I'm going to go for a roller top mount rather than the hard alloy spherical bearing I used, spring rate of 300lbs is about right.
The rear AVO setup worked, however I think it is too complicated for my needs as I don't really have the know how or the testing facilities to play with it. Basically I put all the settings at the half way point and hoped for the best. I think I may revert to A gp4 escort Bilstein rear coilover. Cheaper and less complicated.
Steering was a bit of a job keeping up with and I need to change to the e90 rack which is 2.4 turns lock to lock. If anyone knows of a reasonably priced one please let me know.
All in all the car has great potential and once the driver gets up to speed again it should be competitive in it class and 2wd overall. Next event is the Scottish followed by the Speyside then the Colin Mcrae stages.

Found it online. For some reason this forum clips it off...

130i out for its second outing at the weekend on the Scottish rally.
Bit of a disaster, 4 miles into first stage engine went into safe mode, managed to limp to the end but it wasn,t going any further.
Car home now and all the error codes point towards Vanos solenoid issues or possibly cam sensors.
Tried swapping around and cleaning solenoids but no difference. New solenoids ordered.
Bit of a shame as car was going well with recent modifications. E90 M3 steering rack much better and rear now on Bilstein escort mk 2 coilovers. Also rubber rollertop mounts on front instead of solid alloy top mounts.
There was nothing wrong with the AVO 3 ways I originally had on the back , I just felt they were too complicated for my needs and I didn't know which way to go with them.
AVO's now for sale if anybody is interested £650 the pair. Can be modified to fit E87, E30 0r compact.

Hi Donald, was sorry to see you sitting in the lay by heading to AE, Davie Harkness asked me if I'd seen you as he was wondering what happened to you. Let's hope it just an easy fix.We had a good run apart from loosing approx 10-15sec when we caught a car that was limping out of the 1st stage and then loosing another 30sec in the long 3rd stage with a small over shoot and then getting caught in the hanging dust. Hope to see you back out soon. Cheers Gordon Main car 30

Hi Gordon, a good result for both the BMW's that finished.
Car not fixed yet as my friendly auto electrician has been on holiday but planning on doing the Speyside and the Mcrae.

managed to solve what caused retirement on the Scottish.
The 130 has an oil level/condition sensor on the bottom of the sump and my sumpguard got a stone caught between it and the wiring for this sensor. The engine movement chaffed the wires and shorted a 20amp fuse in the ebox . Unfortunately this fuse is also the supply for the camshaft sensor, maf sensor, DISA valves and the fuel filler valve hence lack of drive and safe mode.
All back working again and no cost. I was getting a bit worried looking at all the fault codes this threw up.
A few mods to the sumpguard and its good to go again. Speyside stages 2nd August

Hi Donald,

I hope you can help.

I just want to pick your brains regarding the brake plumbing on your 1 series.

Does your car have a 2 port master cylinder and if so did you just Tee a line off one of the ports for the front brakes? If so does it work OK?

I'm trying to figure out what to do with my 323ti compact which has ABS and ASC+T and a 2 port master cylinder. I want to retain a standard-ish master cylinder and servo assembly if possible for now but I'm a bit unsure about whether I could use the 2 port master cylinder and just tee a line from one of the ports for the front calipers...

My plan for the back is much the same as your set-up I think - i.e. run a single line from the second master cylinder port through a proportioning valve and tee this line for the rear calipers.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,
My car retains its original 2 port master cylinder and servo. Single Rear line goes via pressure limiter and hydraulic handbrake to T at rear of car and then to each wheel. Front is single line to T and then to each wheel.
All works fine and I see no reason why you should have any problems, just make sure to remove any limiting valves in the rear line.
I keep the servo operational as I find servo brakes easier on my ageing knee and ankle joints, some may prefer harder non servo pedal.
Regards
Donald

Thanks for the info Donald.
I'll stick with the std 2 port m/c for now so.

Sounds like you need a bit of wd-40 on the leg joints...

Brief review of 2014.
Car completed in April and I have done 4 events this year. 3 finishes and 1 dnf due to electrical problem.
It has with the exception of the dnf been completely reliable and great fun to drive but I need to do quite a bit over the winter to try and make it a bit better and quicker.
1). Tyres. so far I have only been using very used Pirelli 205/65 x 15 and 195/70 x15. Works ok in the dry but in the wet grip is negligible. I really need to start splashing out on at least new tyres on the back for every event and probably go a bit narrower on the front.
2). Suspension. fairly happy with my budget Bilstein setup but am going a bit stiffer on the springs. From 300 to 375 on the front and 275 to 300 on the rear. Proflex would be nice but currently outwith the budget.
3). Brakes now work fine once I got a cheap handbrake master cylinder replaced with a genuine Girling item.
4). Under body shielding. The sump and floor guards all work fine but the rear end takes a bit of a hammering. The battery box was smashed on one event and cracked the battery so the plan is to fit a lightweight race battery inside the car and remove the box at the rear. The bottom arm mounts onto the rear subframe are a bit vulnerable and need skidding and the exhaust needs a bit of a reroute where it runs beside the diff.
5).The car is very heavy and needs to go on a serious diet over winter.
Overall I am very pleased with the car. It is a different, powerfull, fun to drive RWD rally car built on a very low budget and once I get a few things sorted it should be reasonably competitive.
Plan for 2015 is to do the 7 Scottish Championship gravel rounds starting with the Snowman in February
